Communication breakdown
Communication Breakdown was heavily influenced by Halo and Kill Zone concept art, which is probably pretty obvious. This piece was one of the last illustrations I completed before committing to working in game engines. Authored in Corel Painter 9 with a 4x5 Wacom Graphire. Communication Breakdown was created without the aid of texture overlays, or photo reference of any kind -- just brush strokes and colors.

Based on world's oldest modern novel The Tale of Genji is a classic work of Japanese literature written by the noblewoman and lady-in-waiting Murasaki Shikibu in the early years of the 11th century. Many illustrations of The Tale of Genji have been produced over the centuries, each with a unique style, perspective, and theme.
I attempted to capture the nuances of these illustrations, and translate them to digital via 3D vector rendering utilizing Electric Rain's Swift 3D. I then composited a texture overlay for the camera to give it that "aged vellum" appearance.

Soft Graphite (6B/8B) on 9"x12" Strathmore acid free paper. I grew up drawing D&D inspired artwork, especially with dark and gritty tones. I drew this before I started working in 3D, circa 2003.

My nickname (and gaming handle) growing up was "OGRE" and as such I drew several types of ogres over the years. This one was feeling quite blue.

Corel Painter 9 using a 4x5 Wacom Graphire tablet around 2007, which I recall was right about the time Frank Miller's 300 was all the craze, and apparently I thought so too!

An unfinished character concept, Corel Painter 9 with a 4x5 Wacom Graphire tablet. I have been told this character had Voldemort undertones, and the HP fanboy inside completely agrees.

Carrot On A Stick was the name of our students-only game development team at Digipen Institute. I didn't get the chance to attend Digipen (and not for a lack of trying) but that didn't stop me from secretly moonlighting with some of their RTIS masters program students! We had a team of 5 programmers and myself; needless to say I had a lot on my plate but it was a ton of fun. Together, we produced two games: Slug 'Em Up! and AVALANCHE!
